William Penn Foundation

Since 1945, the William Penn Foundation has expressed Haas family values through its grantmaking. Our strategic plan, entitled Capitalizing Change, charts a vision and highly-focused strategies designed to help Greater Philadelphia seize the opportunities of a rapidly changing world. Our grantmaking is driven by the passionate belief that Philadelphia can be one of America's great cities.

Capitalizing Change establishes three grantmaking centers to pursue these goals: Close the achievement gap for low-income children by increasing the supply of high-quality schools; ensure clean water by protecting the Delaware and Susquehanna watersheds; make Philadelphia an even more creative community, from Center City to our neighborhoods, including investments in great public spaces. We invest in breakthrough ideas through an Innovation Fund, and help key legacy organizations respond to changing conditions through our Transformation Fund.

As foundations re-envision their strategies to move from funding programs to funding solutions, communications is a central element of this shift. To be truly effective, nonprofits must communicate their strategies and impacts in new ways. And grant decision makers must have a better understanding of what it takes for nonprofits they fund to effectively make that shift.

No other firm in the region has the expertise that Sage offers foundation program staff since the founding partners designed strategies during their years as communications officers at Pew. They also worked with evaluators to measure the results and disseminate lessons learned. For the last ten years at Sage, they have been working with foundations and helping nonprofits design communications strategies that leverage their grant dollars and show true impact.

Today, Sage is poised to respond to the new direction philanthropies are taking by designing new capacity building and training materials that will help nonprofits develop new communications programs that meet solution-driven philanthropy.
